BIRTHDAY RETURN FOR 100-YEAR-OLD EX-MAYOR • One of the steam world’s most iconic engines, Burrell Super Scenic Ex-Mayor made a triumphant return from overhaul in February. The distinctive blue Burrell embarked on a road trip in celebration of the 100th anniversary of it leaving the St Nicholas Works in Thetford. Old Glory correspondent Simon Colbeck was invited to join the team from the Saunders collection to record this historic event.

BACK IN STEAM 33 YEARS LATER! • Sunday 26 January saw the first official steaming of 1909 Burrell 8hp road locomotive No. 3131 in dull, cold and wet conditions, but the day was totally brightened up when this amazing engine silently steamed out of the shed at mid-day the way it did, for the first time in 33 years.
98% OF FUNDING FOR ‘DARJ’ TANK SECURED • Despite being advertised to appear at the Nene Valley Railway for three weekends of train services in February and March, at the start of February owner the National Railway Museum confirmed it still didn’t have a signed contract with its chosen operating partner, Northern Steam Operations Ltd, who were announced as the new custodians of LNER flagship locomotive No. 60103 Flying Scotsman in May last year.
